Jim Sturgis, a distinguished airline executive with four decades of comprehensive operational experience, predominantly in maintenance operations and support functions. His expertise lies in certification and compliance, risk-based process development and analysis, training, regulatory engagement, and operational optimization. With a distinct focus on increasing reliability and reducing cost per available seat mile (CASM), Jim has built a reputation as a leader in his field.
From 2019 to 2022, Jim held the role of COO at EmpowerMX, a cloud-based software company focused on heavy maintenance and ancillary areas of support, such as materials management. He was responsible for product development, implementation, and sustainment, as well as commercial support and engagement. This role allowed him to leverage his operational expertise in the technological space, showcasing his adaptability to changing industry landscapes.
Prior to EmpowerMX, Jim spent seven years as Managing Director of Technical Operations at Southwest Airlines. His responsibilities ranged from Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs to Aircraft Maintenance Programs, Planning, and Reliability. He also drove technology transformation and strategic engineering, emphasizing his ability to integrate technological advancements into traditional airline operations.
Before joining Southwest, Jim co-founded CAVOK, an aviation consultancy that centered its services around operational certification and compliance. Under his leadership, the company experienced growth and was eventually acquired by Oliver Wyman in 2007. Jim's journey reflects his capacity to create, grow, and lead successful ventures in the airline industry.
